Background: In the past, Banneker Athletics programs enjoyed broad community support. This was reflected in the historic performance of our athletic teams in The Metro-Atlanta area, The Region & The State. In more recent years, our Trojan Athletic Legacy has suffered from declining community support.
Declining athletic support in a region that Fulton County Schools has identified as an “Achievement Zone“, is understandable where improvement of academic and behavioral outcomes are the clear priority! However, not forgotten, Principal, Dr. Duke Bradley, Athletic Director, Clinton Lawrance, and a group of volunteer parents have re-launched The Banneker Athletic Booster Club. This move clearly signals renewed focus in seeing Banneker’s Athletic Outcomes improve along side of academic and behavioral improvements as well!
Current Situation: Significant accomplishments in 2016 have positioned this effort for success. In 2016, with the help of established youth sports organizations in the community, Banneker has implemented an infrastructure that includes high school athletics with middle & elementary school feeder programs. As an example, Banneker Football is now well-situated with Elementary and Middle School aged athletes who are learning the game under the watchful eye of new Head Coach, Mario Allen.
The Plan: Implement a phased approach that develops the Touchdown Club for football first. Once established, best practices and lessons learned with football, will be exported to other athletic programs at Banneker High School.
